Bowline Substation

The primary scope of this project, which Holt managed as General Contractor, required the expansion of a live substation next to the operational Bowline power plant located on the Hudson River.

The project included new footing and foundation work and extensions to the existing grounding grid. The original conduits, which were encased in concrete, required emptying before they were replaced. Coordination with the High-Voltage electrical contractors was critical throughout the final phases of construction.

Extreme safety measures were coordinated with the various trades, owners and contractors in the case of any bare, live LV conductor and unscreened live MV/HV conductor from any point where a person was required to stand, which was needed to mitigate safety. Before entering the substation, there were certain prerequisites that were carried out including checking and disabling any fire suppression systems and checking for any hazardous conditions.
