Rehabilitation Unit Relocation

Brooklyn, NY

Holt Construction partnered with the client as general contractor to complete multiple renovations, upgrades and new fit-outs for the major health care provider, located in Brooklyn, NY.

The project was carefully planned and executed using a three-phase approach on the third floor of the facility. Because construction was performed within an active healthcare environment, maintaining patient safety, infection control, and uninterrupted facility operations was a primary consideration throughout the project. The work included the demolition of existing patient rooms, a gym, and nurse’s station, followed by the construction of new patient rooms, clinical spaces, staff areas, and building infrastructure upgrades.

A comprehensive Infection Control Risk Assessment was utilized to establish the appropriate protocols and controls for construction activities within the occupied facility. The project team worked closely with hospital personnel to establish containment measures, control construction dust and debris, manage noise and vibration, and maintain safe separation between construction activities and occupied patient areas.

Phase One was completed first, allowing the remaining portions of the floor to remain operational and available for patients throughout the initial stage of construction. Maintaining these occupied areas required careful coordination of deliveries, worker access, material movement, and daily construction activities. Particular attention was given to limiting dust, odors, and excessive noise, recognizing that the construction environment could directly affect patient comfort, recovery, and the operation of the healthcare facility.

Once Phase One was substantially completed and prepared for occupancy, patients were relocated into the newly completed spaces. This allowed the project team to proceed with Phases Two and Three. The completed areas provided a controlled transition point, enabling the remaining existing patient spaces to be taken offline and renovated without disrupting the overall continuity of patient care. This phased approach allowed the facility to maintain operations while progressively turning over completed areas for patient use.

The final build-out included new east and west patient rooms, upgraded HVAC units, and the installation of two new rooftop units. The project also included new medical gas walls, decorative wall panels, upgraded lighting fixtures and controls, and new patient shower rooms. In addition, a nurse’s station was constructed along with staff meeting areas, offices, and a pantry.
