DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

Our construction programs are rich in their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, within our own organization, how we build, and the ways in which we engage with our clients, and the communities our projects serve. On the jobsite, in the workplace and within senior management – diversity, equity and inclusion principals are unwavering guidepost that define us as an organization.

SETTING NEW STANDARDS

At Holt Construction, our corporate team is comprised of almost 30 percent female professionals. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion on our projects, and within every facet of our organization.

We continue to assess and re-assess our diversity, equity and inclusion programs and progress as we strive to continue to set a higher bar for the industry. In 2020, we embarked on developing and implementing a companywide initiative, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion: Building Communities, Inside and Out.

TOP DOWN LEADERSHIP TO CREATE BOTTOMLINE RESULTS

At Holt, we know that change begins at the top. As a company, we own our core values that have been developed from the start of our company in 1919:

  • Build lasting relationships
  • Respect, honesty and integrity
  • Create jobsite harmony and efficiency
  • Seek to be better
  • Empower each other

THE WAY WE RECRUIT TALENT

Our goal is to increase diversity and inclusivity within every phase of our operations. We continue to measure our performance with a simple system of metrics that assess: diversity demographics, compensation equity, and other factors that help us understand the best way to grow a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.

We recruit our talent from a strategic network of universities, colleges and technical schools, as well as from within the communities that we serve.

THE WORKPLACE WE OFFER

At Holt, we provide an open community that encourages communications throughout all of our divisions and departments and through all levels of staff. From flexible work environments to Employee Resource Groups that capture the diversity of thought and culture that defines us, we continue to listen and learn more about what our team needs, wants and aspires to. That information translates into very measurable outcomes:

  • Competitive and equitable compensation
  • Promotions and growth from within
  • Family centric policies and procedures designed to promote work life balance
  • Resources and training programs to elevate construction performance

THE WAY WE BUILD

We engage and encourage smaller, diverse subcontractors on our projects. We understand the challenges that small businesses may encounter as they participate in both small and larger projects. We facilitate opportunities and training that support small businesses, such as minority and women business enterprises, locally-based enterprises, disadvantaged business enterprises and service-disabled veteran owned businesses, to gain larger contracts and new business development opportunities.

  • Education, Training and Networking Programs. At Holt, we engage MWBEs, LBEs and SDVOBs in select projects as part of targeted outreach program. Our firm is a recognized construction contractor with a proven process for identifying, recruiting, prequalifying, and contracting with these firms in our construction projects. For all of our projects, we meet and usually exceed 30 percent goals. But we recognize that more and better information is the key to business growth and success for smaller firms.
  • Building Capacity Through Education. In 2020 as part of a project with American Airlines we launched Holt Opportunity Fridays, a targeted series of weekly information and networking sessions designed to assist small businesses to understand distinct aspects of our building program. We have since expanded this program to cover the Newark area in hopes of helping more small businesses get involved at EWR Airport.
  • Networking is the Next Step. Our next program phase will focus on connecting MWBEs, LBEs and SDVOBs with Tier 1 subcontractors and prime contractors. Using new virtual platforms, we are hosting sessions with our contractors and small businesses to facilitate more meaningful connections.
  • Building Solutions. Often small companies lack the resources to pre-qualify for a bid opportunity. Holt is developing a new program designed to help companies who have not met minimum prequalification requirements or have bid and not been awarded a contract access financial, insurance, training and other capacity building resources to overcome these challenges.

CREATING NEW AND BETTER JOBS

We recognize the benefits a construction project brings to the community it serves. Our engagement approach does not end at the contracts phase. To that end, we develop community outreach and engagement programs designed to assist local residents interested in the construction industry gain a pathway to new jobs, as well as to pre-apprenticeship and construction readiness programs that will enable them to create careers for today and the future.
